Following in the footsteps of Antony Gormley, Jasper Johns & Cynthia Plastercaster, artists who are all well known for their penis castings, I have continued the tradition. Gormley famously casts himself naked in his work, Johns did the same in his target painting and Cynthia, was a groupie that used her skills to get close to rock stars.
All these casts date back to 2006 based on a commission to make a wall of genitals, titled The Spice of Life for a in London museum. Variety is the spice of life and this work is a cheeky, in your face exposé of the huge variety of shapes and sizes that exist in normal human bodies.

The flaccid and erect penis panels are cast from the same moulds as The Spice of Life. Similar to The Great Wall of Vagina, the ethos behind them is when you’ve seen what everyone else has, you’re gonna feel fine about your own. I included myself in this work so I had one less stranger’s willy to handle but also because it was a chance to compare myself. It was the relief that this brought that showed me how healing being cast and seeing other casts can be. There is way too much genital anxiety out there in both sexes and pornography with its emphasis on certain tropes, is to blame.
The models were a self-selecting group and mostly only guys with bigger willies were willing to come along. Hence I think size is overrepresented in these works – in case they were making you wince. If they fail in their mission, that is my error but as a visual feast they succeed and I think they are hilarious. Dicks just are! Using humour is a great tool in artworks devised to bring about a change in people. It gets under their radar, past their natural resistance to awkward subjects.
The penis tip artworks are created from my cast for The Spice of Life. They are meant to be ridiculous in case that’s what you are thinking. Whether its making flags with them, door handles or a gold plated mascot for the car, the purpose is to do no more than amuse. Men take their dicks too seriously. I don’t!
