Surviving Breast Cancer

With increasing frequency I have been asked by women, who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer, to create casts of their breasts. These are often prior to mastectomy but also out of concern that might be the outcome.

Many wish to include the scars from their surgeries as a mark of being a survivor. I wanted to honour this work somehow and with the encouragement of one woman who came to be cast with all her friends in solidarity I produced the before and after diptych below.

With over 1/3 of us expected to have a cancer in our lifetime, everybody is affected. Currently one in eight women will get breast cancer and the numbers are rising. In what is described by some as an epidemic, it is increasingly understood that environmental factors play a huge part.

I will be donating to breast cancer charities in the UK from the profits of all future breast cancer castings.
