In 2001 I entered a design competition, judged by Trevor Bayliss of wind-up radio fame, to create a better washing line. I gave the notoriously hideous rotary line a complete redesign. The line is a carbon fibre spiral that winds from the outside edge to the central spindle. The adjustable pole and arms are steel with translucent blue resin end caps and hubs. Blue elastic straps support the spiral, the base of which can be raised and lowered from a flat disc to a bowl shape to accommodate more washing. It worked beautifully and I used it at home for years.
