When Clive turned up I was struck by his physicality. He’s a big guy. I wanted an athletic pose that also showed off his tattooed shoulder. This swimming pose was perfect. Charging through the water there is a lot of energy in this piece. The lighting and the structure of the multiple layers help suggest the rippling of the water across his back. That and the slight elongation of the body and his emergence into the frame from the left help suggest his rapid movement past us. Moonlight plays across his back, picking him out in the black water.
