Marble Spiral

Spiral torso sculpture commission for a couple in the USA, hand-carved from a solid block of pure marble  One of three sculptures commissioned by her husband. The main image shows how beautifully translucent the stone is when carved this thinly.

I create these spiral wraps around the body in cast bronze and carved marble and they are something of a signature of mine. They appear to be rather unique. Both materials have unique challenges but the marble is perhaps the most complex. Balancing the need to thick enough to be strong but also thin enough to appear light and ribbon-like is not easy to accomplish in stone. You don’t get a second chance!

The marble was sourced from the famous Carrara quarries that Michelangelo used, in use now for nearly 2000 years. To get the best pieces to work with you have to go there and hunt around the stone yards for the perfect block.
