Abstracted figurative hanging sculpture of a man’s torso in a spiral peel around the body with scrolling details. A private commission for a personal trainer with a great physique, inspired by my Skin Deep limited edition and heavily influenced by Escher drawings.
The spiralling wrap around the torso reveals the inside contours of his body as well. I’ve used the natural curves and features on his body to direct the lines of the spiral but also added scrolling features at the back that further abstract the body.
He has a strong physicality enhanced by the muscle pose and the sculpture suggests that his coiled strength goes beyond the skin. Usually the inside of a casting isn’t visible and is just a rough unfinished texture. Because here it is visible the inside is worked by hand to a high level of finish. Exposing my slightly obsessive side, I often finish the backs of my artworks which would generally never be seen. The inside has a darker patina than the skin side to enhance the contrast.
