Glastonbury 2014

I was invited by the science communication group Guerilla Science to play the lead role of Harvey Nipples at a spoof department store.

Making social science accessible to the public using quirky humour, they were exploring sexual diversity at Glastonbury Music Festival for the Wellcome Trust. Sadly we had to change the name of the event to Heavenly Nipples, due to a sense of humour failure around the branding.

One size fits all may work for silly hats and plastic ponchos, but when it comes to sexuality, diversity reigns supreme. To celebrate the fact that the human body comes in a range of shapes and sizes, and you are normal whatever you have down there, part of The Great Wall of Vagina was presented in the venue alongside spoof beauty products I created.

I also set up scanning equipment and invited the audience to pose for an image of part of their anatomy, resulting in a new composite artwork about body image.

On entering the store, Glastonbury’s revellers were treated to a one-on-one consultation session with our beauty technicians, and invited to tweak their physique to suit every need. Audiences were invited to browse a range of accessories inspired by the ‘latest trends’ in sexual enhancement. They could acquire a third nipple, re-colour their anus, pimp their pubic hair, and even sample a chimpanzee testicle graft.

In addition to their customer service duties, the team of actors portrayed history’s sexologists, from Beverley Whipple to Alfred Kinsey, asking the audience a list of questions that were complied with researchers from the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (NATSAL) – one of the world’s largest scientific studies of sexual behaviour.

Heavenly Nipples ran day and night in the Heaven Field of Shangri-La, the raucous ‘naughty corner’ of Britain’s largest music festival, and attracted 2,000 visitors over four days.
