Bug Art #1

Foam core board with squashed insects made by attaching it to the front of a vehicle on a long drive. A random pattern of dots and splats of various colours is formed as the bugs explode against it. These bugs remain as a permanent record of that trip, alongside a map of the journey.

From a series of squashed bug art in the Objets d’Aft collection. On one level it records a journey in an unorthodox and humorous way. But on another, more sinister level, it records how many insects I was responsible for killing on that section of my vehicle on that road trip. Usually washed off the car with little regard, here I highlight the slaughter instead. By framing and exhibiting the insect necropolis I have thought more about the literal impact on nature of my activities. Maybe work like this can go a tiny way to making us all consider our total environmental tally.
