Portrait memorial sculpture commission of a baby created after his death.
I was asked by the parents if I would be willing to go to the mortuary to take a death mask from which to sculpt his portrait. Having previously done a few death masks including one of my father I agreed.
Death masks are a good basis to work from as they give the right of size and proportion. But they are not a good representation of the vibrant, living soul that they were.
Having met the little chap a few weeks earlier I use that knowledge of him and photos to conjure a lifelike sculpture, in close collaboration with his mum all the way through the process.
