Artist CV and Biography

“The work of an artist is to make themselves fully known.” –  Daisaku Ikeda

Curriculum Vitae

I’m a full-time artist with over 30 years experience. I have a multidisciplinary and often experimental approach, creating highly finished, museum quality artworks. My personal work often has a strong sociopolitical purpose such as women’s rights, conflict, mental health, the environment etc. I embrace new media and enjoy collaborating with other artists, technicians, scientists, social enterprises and the public. My commercial work is largely based on the body, using sculpture and photography.

My most recognised work is The Great Wall of Vagina (now Vulva). Exhibited in museums in Milan, Lisbon and Miami and several commercial galleries, it has kept me constantly in the international press since 2008. I have been self-representing since the closure of The Kaleidoscope and Hay Hill galleries in London, whom I was with for many years.

Before I became a full time artist I worked as a sculptor and prop maker in the film industry, working on feature films such as Casino Royale. At the same time I ran my own forge, making abstract, animal sculptures in steel. In 1997 I established what has become the UK’s most successful body casting studio, to fund my personal projects. We have create private and commercial sculpture commissions for clients in many countries, including A-list artists, celebrities and royals.

Artist Biography

Jamie is an English artist with a Bfa in Experimental Studio Art from Hartford Art School, USA, class of 1991. Having crewed on a peace boat and campaigned for environmental groups in his youth, Jamie’s socio-political interests continue to influence his personal work. With a career-long commitment to experimentation, he focuses on new ways to present the human mind, body and spirit. Often exploring emotive subjects this work tends to court controversy.

His most famous work is The Great Wall of Vagina, an eight metre long wall sculpture in which he collaborated with 400 women volunteers. The purpose was to present an alternative to the popular aesthetic that is driving an epidemic of genital anxieties and an exponential rise in unnecessary, genital cosmetic surgeries. Five years in the making and entirely self-funded, it typifies Jamie’s artistic determination. Appearing in numerous medical and educational texts it is championed as a game changer in combating genital anxiety. It has become a hugely influential feminist artwork, which literally changes people’s lives. It currently at the Wilzig Museum Building in Miami and was previously at MU-sex in Lisbon and the Triennale Museum in Milan. I has also twice been in London at the Mall Galleries in 2015 and the Hay Hill Gallery on Cork Street in 2012 and at the artist’s studio in Brighton in 2011.

In his commercial work he is hugely successful as a commissioned artist, creating figurative sculptures in bronze, plaster, glass and fibreglass. He is also increasingly known for his scanner photography, producing life size body portraits, collaged from many images. He also exhibits at commercial galleries around the world when he is able, in between his other work.

With his work constantly in the media, Jamie has gained an international reputation a leading underground artist. Publicly speaking on subjects such as figurative art and censorship and the importance of art as an engine of social change, he remains a campaigner and advocate for many causes. He has also appeared in several art and education books and has private collectors around the world.
