“When it comes to art, it’s important not to hide the madness.” – Atticus
I always hated having to show my ‘workings out’ in maths exams and my preparatory sketches in art. In the former it exposed the fact I was largely guessing and in the latter I felt it spoiled the magic. Never show how the trick is done, I thought. But then I got older, if not wiser, and realised that opening a window onto my process not only gives the viewer some access which can allow greater appreciation of the work but it helps throw some light onto it for me as well.
Excerpts from the vaults. A history of lost causes. Things I started but didn’t finish… yet. Failed experiments and happy accidents. Great and not so great ideas. Sketches, maquettes and workings out. Grand plans, hubristic garbage and grandiose nonsense. The seeds of some of my best work. It’s all here to pick about in if it amuses you so to do.
